Who is Ma Lou?

Ma Lou was my great grandmother, Mary Louise Harrill Martin (1866 - 1945).  She died long before I was born, but I was lucky enough to inherit two of her quilts, details of two of which are on my blog masthead.  That's also my favorite picture of her in the masthead.  She has a ribbon on from the Colfax Fair which was THE big event held in my hometown (Ellenboro, NC) every year.  I'm sure she must have had a few quilts entered in the show.

Ma Lou and her husband, Pa John Martin, ran The Piedmont, a big two story wooden boarding house across the road from the train depot.  I recall very well the huge long dining hall and best of all, the swings in the wonderfully shaded front porch.  The house was torn down in the 1970s and a small brick town hall now stands in its place.
